What is an independent website?

independent website refers to the official Internet website where the seller has an independent domain name, independent brand, and independent page

It does not rely on third-party platforms (such as Amazon, eBay, Tmall, etc.) and has the following core features: It has the independent decision-making right to operate, exclusively and precipitate user core data without having to pay platform commissions and points, and has an independent rules system with no risk of store closure.

The difference between independent websites and brands

The independent website is the digital carrier and sales terminal of the brand, and the brand is the soul and source of premium of the independent website. The core of the independent website (channel dimension) is traffic conversion, transaction closed loop, technical website construction and supply chain delivery to solve the problem of "where to sell". The core of brand (cognitive dimension) is mental occupation, emotional resonance, unique tone and premium ability, which solves the problem of "why users buy".

Why do so many businesses choose to build independent websites?

After analyzing the growth paths of tens of thousands of overseas companies in recent years, we found that "independent websites" are evolving from an alternative in the past to today's core corporate strategy

Behind the rush of merchants are three irreversible business fundamentals: Data Ownership: on an independent site, you can fully own consumer behavior paths, emails, and customer profiles. With precise retargeting, you can increase repeat purchases and retain users at lower cost. Brand premium and positioning: unlike marketplace list-price comparison, an independent site supports customized visuals and storytelling, giving products a 20% to 50% brand premium and moving away from pure price competition. Risk-resistant moat: the era of omnichannel layout has arrived. As the official foundation of a business, an independent site is not controlled by any single platform policy, making it the most stable path for long-term asset growth. An independent site is not just a sales channel, but a digital asset for building a global brand.

Can an independent website really be profitable?

We analyzed 50+ real-life Shopify stores and found that the key to success lies in product selection strategy, advertising ROI control, and conversion rate optimization. For example, a clothing store used Facebook ads to accurately test products and redirect audiences, and itsROAS counterattacked from 1.2 to 4.8; another home furnishing store iterated its product pages through A/B testing, and itsconversion rate increased strongly from 1.5% to 3.8%. You can view the complete data analysis, creative strategies and cost structures of these cases to see how they went from $0$ to selling $80Kper month.

Clear, practical answers to help you build a stable independent store that can grow sustainably.

Which platform should I use to build an independent store?

If you want to launch quickly with less technical maintenance, Shopify is usually the strongest starting point: it offers reliable hosting and a mature ecosystem for themes, payments, shipping, advertising, and analytics. WooCommerce suits teams that need deeper customization and have technical resources, while SaaS platforms such as Shoplazza may appeal to cross-border teams that prefer Chinese-language support.

Compare payment availability in your target markets, monthly and app costs, page speed, multilingual and multicurrency support, SEO capabilities, and long-term maintenance rather than choosing on first-year price alone.

How do independent stores accept payments?

Independent stores commonly accept payments through Shopify Payments, Stripe, PayPal, or local payment methods in their target markets. Before applying, prepare your business details, bank account, identity or company documents, and complete the store's contact, privacy, refund, and shipping policy pages.

Offer at least card payments and PayPal where available, then test successful and failed payments, refunds, and chargebacks before launch. Eligibility, fees, reserves, and payout schedules depend on the provider's review and your country or region.

How do I connect a domain to an independent store?

Register a domain through Shopify, Cloudflare, Namecheap, GoDaddy, or another registrar, then add the DNS records supplied by your store platform. This usually means an A record for the root domain and a CNAME for the www subdomain. Set the connected domain as primary and allow time for DNS and the SSL certificate to activate.

Before launch, check www and non-www redirects, HTTPS, redirects from old URLs, and the sitemap. Configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC separately for your business email to improve deliverability.

How do independent stores fulfill and ship orders?

Common fulfillment models include direct international shipping, overseas warehouses or third-party logistics providers (3PLs), and supplier dropshipping. Direct shipping is useful for validating demand at low order volume. Once sales stabilize, a 3PL or overseas warehouse can improve delivery times and unit economics, but it adds inventory and storage risk.

Configure shipping zones, rates, free-shipping thresholds, taxes, estimated delivery times, and tracking by market. Clearly state processing time, transit time, duties, lost-parcel handling, and return-to-sender rules on product and shipping policy pages.

How long does it take to receive payouts?

Card processors commonly pay out in about two to seven business days, but first payouts, new accounts, holidays, international transfers, or risk reviews can take longer. PayPal and local payment methods follow their own schedules. Refunds, chargebacks, rolling reserves, and bank processing time can also delay available funds.

Before activation, confirm the settlement currency, withdrawal fees, minimum payout, reserve requirements, and payout schedule. New stores should keep at least two to four weeks of working capital for advertising, inventory, and logistics rather than treating every order value as immediately available cash.
